Thomas Goetz wrote an timely article highlight the importance of reporting all research outcomes including failed experiments (dark data*). To truly advance the body of knowledge in the most efficient and cost effective manner, we need to know both what works and what doesn’t and learn from it. We need to celebrate success but also give due recognition to “failures“.
Every original research outcomes adds to the entire body of knowledge. Essential reading for research students.
* Dark data – The unpublished, inconclusive, or inconvenient results that too many researchers would rather stick in a drawer than put into the light so that others may learn from their work (and perhaps build on it).
